Rancor

Prepare yourself for another movie monster! This time you’ll meet a guy from the Starwars franchise, the abominable Rancor!

Early concept art of this creature was designed by Joe Johnston, the director of Jumanji and Jurassic Park 3. Joe also provided the final designs for Yoda and Boba Fett in the Star Wars movies. The Rancor in Return of the Jedi was originally intended to be a man in a suit like the Japanese Godzilla monster, however the result wasn’t convincing. So the rancor was made into a stop motion puppet which was a pretty good idea, because here decades later, it still looks amazing. (At least I think it does)

The rancor has been described by its designers as a hybrid between a potato and a bear. It is a fierce and armored reptomammal indigenous to the planet Dathomir, although the Rancor in the movie is seen on the planet Tatooine. If you have seen the awesome movie, you will without a doubt remember the scene when Luke Skywalker falls down the Rancor pit in Jabba’s Palace and the Rancor is unleashed upon him. That truly is an impressive scene!

I will without a doubt write about more star wars creatures in future posts, what creatures would you like me to write about? :)
