Cerberus (Greek Mythology)

Today we will explore another mythological creature. The 3 headed dog Cerberus from Greek mythology.

Cerberus looks like a big mean dog with 3 heads. It has actually been depicted as a dog with 1-50 heads throughout history, but the most common is 3. It is a guard dog and guards the gates of Hades, the underworld in Greek mythology. Its job is to prevent people who have crossed the river Styx from returning to the world of the living.

The Cerberus is a well known mythological creature and has appeared in numerous video games like Age of mythology and Kingdom Hearts to name a few. It has also appeared in a lot of movies like Clash of the Titans. A large 3 headed dog named Fluffy can be seen in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, this beast is clearly inspired by Cerberus. According to the myth Cerberus fell asleep when Orpheus played some music for him and the same thing happens to Fluffy in Harry Potter.

Next Friday you can expect a mythological creature that isn’t from Greek mythology, I promise ;) And tomorrow you can look forward to an extinct creature!
